Pastor Sherman A. Gordon, D. Min. is the founding, Senior Pastor of the New Philadelphia A.M.E. Church Family located in Carson, California. Under his dynamic leadership, New Philadelphia has grown exponentially since it’s inception, and has become one of the fastest growing churches nationally. New Philadelphia, established in 1997, has over 2100 members and 35 active ministries. The church first worshipped in the Carson Community Center and later moved into a converted warehouse in Carson, but on February 5, 2005, Dr. Gordon ushered his congregation into their newly purchased church home, a 64,500 sq. ft. campus on 4.4 acres in Rancho Dominguez, CA.

This young, powerful Pastor, Preacher, Teacher, and Leader is able to build bridges and reach across generations, gender, race, culture and ethnicity that changes, rebuilds and restores lives. Parents and youth in search of partnerships instead of persecution, guidance instead of guilt, and opportunity instead of opposition often join after just one visit. According to Pastor Gordon, people frequent New Philadelphia in multitude because they “feel the warmth and love upon entering the church doors. The church stresses “kinship over membership.” Pastor Gordon maintains that members are not joining the church – they are joining the family.

At 34 years old, Sherman A. Gordon, D. Min. has achieved much. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Pre Law/Sociology from the University of California Santa Barbara and a Masters of Arts in Religion from the School of Theology at Claremont in Claremont, California, and his doctoral degree (D.Min) from the United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. He is the Director of Men’s Ministry for the So. California A.M.E. Fifth District; the Chairman of the Board of NuPower Community Outreach Services, Inc. and a Board Member and Educational Instructor at the First Church of God School of Ministry. Doctor Gordon is a commissioner on the City of Carson's Fine Arts and Historical Commission.

Dr. Gordon was recognized in the Summer 2005 issue of the African American Pulpit as one of the ‘20 to Watch’. In the February 2003 issue of Ebony Magazine, Dr. Gordon was acknowledged as one of the ‘Young Leaders of the Future’. His Biblical knowledge has afforded him the opportunity to be a guest lecturer at the Robert Schuller School of Ministry at the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, CA. and a workshop leader at the 2003 Robert H. Schuller Institute of Successful Church Leadership. In 2005, Dr. Gordon recently traveled with the A.M.E. Church Freedom Bus to New Orleans, Louisiana to aid and comfort victims of Hurricane Katrina. He recently returned to Gulfport, Mississippi, for the second time, to assist in rebuilding homes for the hurricane victims.

Dr. Sherman A. Gordon founded Sherman Gordon Ministries in 2004. It is the goal of Sherman Gordon Ministries to "Teach with Clarity, Preach with Simplicity, and Give with Charity." The ministry works continuously toward this goal through mentoring and molding young minds, educational workshops, exemplifying moral leadership, ministering the gospel, and being actively involved in community awareness. Every year Sherman Gordon Ministries awards a deserving student with the Annual Sherman A. Gordon Scholarship. The student chosen is one who has excelled not only academically, but within their community as well.

His colorful, thought- provoking style can be heard locally on 1460 AM on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. Many lives are touched by the life changing, inspirational, uplifting, saving, and spirit-filled message of the Gospel. Dr. Gordon is married to Marina Gordon and they are the parents of one daughter, Exodus Nia and a son, Eden Hill.
